Hi everyone! I lost weight while being closely monitored by a few health professionals, because losing weight wasn’t the main objective, just an expected side effect.
I wasn’t fat, just slightly overweight, but I was too close to a number of chronic illnesses at 18, because I ate that bad. I also had a long history of eating disorders, something that was troublesome when the main change I had to make was related to food. My relationship with food was terrible already, my self-esteem was incredibly low, and I prioritized losing weight over my well-being. So, a delicate balance had to be maintained. My physical health couldn’t be prioritized over my mental health, and vice versa.
So, what worked for me?: Counting calories.
My daily intake of food had to be tracked every single day for several months. But it wasn’t about calories, although my caloric intake was somehow restricted. It was all about macronutrients. My intake of proteins, carbohydrates and fat had to be measured, as well as my intake of sodium and refined sugar.
This changed the way I saw food. People worry too much about calorie intake and too little about nutrition, and I was (and still am at times) definitely among them. 100 calories were just 100 calories to me, I didn’t care if they came from one kilo of lettuce, 1.3 eggs, or 12 fries. And then I was on a special diet that forced me to distribute my caloric intake according to percentages. A number of calories had to come from proteins, a number of calories had to come from fat, and so on and so on.
I thought this was going to feel more restrictive than my previous approach to dieting (which was basically eating a lot, feeling guilty, and then puking, or spending several days fasting), but it was quite the opposite. I had way more control over what I ate for every meal without feeling restricted at all. Every dish in front of me was carefully prepared in order to target all my macronutrients, and the possible combinations were endless, so I never got bored. And then I learned all the tricks that helped me stay satiated and happy while losing weight. I understood the noble art of portion control, weighting my ingredients while cooking became a second nature to me, and by the end of my treatment, I was leaner, thinner and more importantly, healthier.
I’m 26 now, and the weight I lost never came back. My average weight does fluctuate a little during any given year because I’m a human being and that’s just how things work, but my physical and mental health haven’t… for the most part. Eating disorders are treatable, but rarely curable. You can keep them under control, but you can’t get rid of them fully. My new relationship with food definitely helps, and everything I learned 8 years ago contributes as well. I’m a pro at reading nutritional information labels, I still keep a small scale in my kitchen (that I don’t use all the time, but frequently enough), and I try my best to measure my portions adequately (Trust me, estimating portions by “eyeballing it” is a very inexact science). Still, I try my best not to stress about it, and that includes accepting a certain number of truths, like the fact that I will gain a few kilos from time to time, or that eating highly caloric meals is accepted as long as that is the exception and not the norm in my diet.
Still, counting calories and focusing on macronutrients makes you a more conscious eater, and that can have a positive impact in your life beyond weight loss.
