    A study found that a diet high in protein, which is the main component of eggs, showed rapid weight loss in older obese people.

    An expert team from Weill Cornell Medical College and New York University studied the metabolism of obese patients with type 2 diabetes who were put on a high-protein diet. Their findings were published in the journal Cell Metabolism.

    The study was led by Stephen O'Keefe, professor of cell biology and medicine in the department of pathology and immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College. The study involved 30 obese patients with type 2 diabetes and a high risk for heart attack.

    Their diets were monitored before, during and after the exercise program. Their protein intake was analyzed to find out the main constituents of the diet and their effects on the metabolism of the food. After 21 days, the subjects were put on a 3,000-calorie a day diet with 20 percent protein, 25 percent carbohydrates and the remaining fat. The protein intake was low enough to lose weight.

    The results showed that the high-protein diet was less affected by the intestinal absorption of protein and could be sufficient for rapid weight loss. The patients lost an average of 12 percent of their body weight and showed an impressive improvement in insulin sensitivity.
